A Victims Perspective - Essay ExampleDespite of this reduction, violent crimes in the solid ground atomic number 18 know to be around 1.2 million (Frieden 2012). These statistics indicate the fact that more than millions of lives and more than millions of families are subjected to violent crimes annually. Despite of the reduction, it needs to be soundless that the lives of the victims of the crimes be make scarred every year. I sacrifice been through one such experience of a violent crime when I recently witnessed the collide with of my aunt who stays in my neighbourhood. This event has left a great impact on me and has hampered my day to day activities. It has crippled me physically, emotionally as substantially as financially. I had read ab erupt the fact that crime victims suffer from many after effects following the violent crimes. These include post traumatic mental strain disorder, delusions and constant fear. Furthermore, the victims are repeatedly reminded of the crime by the interrogators who question with regard to the crime very often. Anxiety and stress are also known to affect these victims (Cox 2006). I have been suffering from all of these problems ever since the crime. I cannot sleep well and there is always a constant fear of cosmos interrogated and reminded of the happenings on that day. I was very unlucky to have witnessed the murder of my aunt by the man who loved her and had promised that he would marry her. He is still on the run and I feel helpless. There are many challenges that I have to overcome before I can return my life patronise to normal. But the biggest challenge that needs to be tackled is to overcome the fear that I face when I want to go forthside. It has been very difficult for me to step out of the house as there is a constant fear that I might be attacked by the murderer or that I might come across a similar incident again. I would have to gather my strength again and be ready to take all the support that my famil y and friends are offering me. To overcome this difficulty, I would also need to cooperate in a better way with the interrogators so that they can find the criminal and out him behind the bars. This will not be easy as it will require great willpower from my side. Difficulties have been my way following this incident. I have to answer the queries and questions not only of the investigators but also of the people living around me. This serves to remind me of the incident again and again. I am emotionally crank as I cannot interact with anyone and my social life has totally ended. Furthermore, I have started visiting a psychiatrist as I am inefficient to sleep at night. I have not been going to my college as I do not think I will be qualified to face all the people and talk to anyone. My part time job has also been affected. Thus I have been drained financially as well. The stress and anxiety does not let me concentrate. I have assessed the fact that I need to come to terms with th e event that has happened and face it rather than hide from it. I have tried searching and I have seen man y victims who have been suffering since years. I also watched the documentary Beyond Conviction by Rachel Libert (2006) to understand the feelings and emotions of other people suffering like me. The stories of Angela whose father was murdered and of Lyndy who was raped seem very similar to the situation that I

Los Vendidos by Luis Valdez Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Los Vendidos by Luis Valdez - Research Paper ExampleThough the mood of the play is light hearted or comic, it discusses grave issues that crave heavy(p) social attention. The play brings to our notice the issues like social injustice, racism and the class segregation where the Americans always expected the Mexicans to rise up to their expectation. This attitude of the Americans is quite unvarnished in the words of the secretary in the play where she demands the kind of robot that walks and behaves in the American fashion. A critical estimate of the play makes one unify with the Canadian writer, Ryan McFadden when he rightly observed thus, Los Vendidos is a play centred on drawing great attention to the misconstrued stereotypes of Chicanos while covertly ridiculing Americans which in turn successfully brings about conversation and critical thinking of these stereotypes and inspires viewers the opportunity to change their preconceived notions of Chicanos (McFadden para.1). Therefore , the proposed critical study aims to establish aforesaid statement, that is, the play is a criticism, presented in a satirical way, against the existing social injustice touching the Mexican Americans from the Native Americans. The setting of this one-act play is located at Honest Sanchos Used Mexican Lot and Mexican Curio Shop, a shop located in California that sells various kinds of robots, stereotypes of Mexicans and Mexican Americans.... The very presentation of the salesman-cum owner, Honest Sancho and the customer, Miss Jimenez, who introduces herself as secretary for Governor Reagan, itself provides enough materials for the audience about the Mexican and Mexican American clash. Jimenezs reprimand to Sanchos mispronunciation of her name in bad position, when he actually used Spanish accent, provides ample evidence for this disagreement. The attitude of the Mexican American to the Mexican is crystal clear at her ignorance to the cultural stereotypes exhibited in that showroom, though belongs to the Chicana or the Mexican American and was actually looking for a Mexican type. The satirical note in the play is very notable that the dramatist does not spare even a single chance to criticise dominating mentality of the Americans. Elements of the comedy of manners in Los Vendidos can be specially identified when considering Valdezs satirizing of his Chicano stock characters (Stereotyped, flat characters or caricatures) that fail to conform the conventions of the U.S. society (Vogelmann p.7). The reluctance of the Mexican Americans to mingle with the Mexicans has been shaded in the words of the Secretary when she disagrees with the search buying the first two robots. She rejects the first robot which is in the form of the farm worker, just because of the reason that he does not know English, which has an elite component of American culture which the Mexicans lacked. In order to proposes these issues, the dramatist resorts to realistic comedy which really enh ances the quality of the presentation, especially the conversation between Sancho and the secretary. According to Vogelmann, The most eventful elements of realistic comedy in Luis Valdezs acto Los Vendidos are,

Art Blog Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Art Blog - Assignment ExampleThat is probably one of the inner(a) concept of the totality of the exhibit --- how both affaire is connected. The art works in this exhibit are connections to our past --- in fact, a very important past in the history of L.A. 2. Crosscurrents A Day in the Life This is a very interesting post you wrote, Hailey, and the word tradition really caught my attention. Yes, the Crosscurrents exhibit is really round our culture and tradition --- much same(p) a history of how everything came to be as they are now. Valentines exhibit, which you mentioned is somewhat a miniature of what is at work present(predicate) in the exhibit. You mentioned What I enjoyed most about this exhibit was that it showed the process taken to make the Gray Column with photos, text and video, and told the story of how it was created. For me, I see every fragment of art work here as the step-by-step process of how it evolved to the modern art we know today. I also agree with you on your hear of Henry Takemotos Untitled piece of circular shape with blue brushwork. Its like an heirloom piece --- a piece of heritage. 3. Crosscurrents Solid Light Grace, it is so true when you label Computer images and pictures dont do this artwork any justice at all. I also love how you pointed out that the art piece looks diametrical from different angles. The personal manner you compared this piece of art to a sculpture and a painting at the same time is also a brilliant way of looking into this. I have always liked it to find someone who may not be truly able to understand a piece of art work, yet is able to find himself or herself communicating with it. The way you did your research makes me think that this art work really captured your interest. If I may say too, that the strategic placement of the art pieces also helped a lot in showcasing the maximum potential of each piece. It seems to me now that were some pieces placed at a different position, it probably would not have evoked the same experience for us. 4. Under the Big Black Sun They All Woke Up Jaime, I do like the boldness of the posters too. They were brave and daring. We all know history and we do know too that that courage is what brought about the political and cultural movement in L.A. for the better. Thank goodness now were celebrating diversity --- at least Things such as these make me realize that there is beauty in the midst of heretofore a horrible part of history. I am not an expert in graphic design, but I do know that the art here is not merely in the designs and the colors or the imagery at work. I feel there is also art in the way these passel then responded to political and cultural issues through creative protests. The old adage a picture paints a thousands words seems to simple to even use to orbit the total idea of this whole exhibit. 5. Under the Big Black Sun Rewind Hey there, Hailey. No one can really expect everybody to experience the same thing with every exhibi t. But what I appreciate in your post is your directness. You know what you were expecting and you know when youre not getting it. And despite how things seem to let you down, you still kept looking for something that will appeal to your senses. I also agree with your comment about Chris Burdens The Reason for the Neutron Bomb (1979). Meticulous and precise even seem like understatements at one angle, but since you mentioned angles, have you tried looking at that art work from different

LAW - Essay ExampleThey were convicted and sentenced for felony murder in the Supreme Court of the State of New York for New York County. Judgment was affirmed without mind in the Appellate Division. A motion to reargue was denied by the New York Court of Appeals on June 15, 1976.Victory was tried for felony murder (N.Y.Penal L. 125.25(3) predicated upon the crime of move in the warrant degree (id. 205.10(2)). To convict Victory the jury had to find that Bornholdt and he escaped from custody after Officer Varecha had arrested them for a felony and that the policeman was shot in the line of achievement of or in furtherance of this escape. In charging the jury, the trial judge explained several cartridge clips that it was necessary for them to find that an escape was being committed at the time Varecha was shot in order to convict Victory of felony murder. http//cases.justia.com/us-court-of-appeals/F2/570/66/3893 For example, the prosecution must show that during the commission or attempted commission of the crime of escape in the entropy degree, and in the course of and in furtherance of that crime, or the immediate flight there from, a defendant caused the dying of a individual other than one of the participants. Both the crime of felony murder and the crime of escape in the second degree were submitted. After retiring, the jury asked for a re-reading of the law of escape, and doubly for a re-reading of testimony about events prior to the shooting. As a matter of law, does the fact of flight after the shooting itself establish escape in the second degree after an arrest has been made for felony assault? The judge indicated that there was no categorical answer to the question posed, carefully stated what the jury would be required to find for a conviction of escape in the second degree, then re-read the statutory definition of felony murder which, as the jury had often heard, requires death be caused in the course of or in furtherance of a predicate

Take Back the Night April 17, 2008 Essay Example for Free

Take Back the Night April 17, 2008 EssayTake Back the Night was an evening dedicated to taking a stand against elicitual violence, chiefly on females. The point had many phases including musicals and spoken word performances, such as the Denim Day fashion show, Walk in Her Shoes contest, and the candlelight vigil. The event started off by introducing the concept of fighting against violence, especially those who were stamp downd by power. Those who were sexually violated and those who have experienced sexual violence sometime in their lives were also given much attention. Take Back the Night was a reclamation of the right to feel and be safe all the time, especially during the evenings. Statistics showed that an reasonable harasser molests eighteen times before being apprehended. This was an information that surprised every whizz. During the event, R. E. A. C. H peer educators were present to showcase their talents through playing music, singing, reading poetries, and share- out their feelings and emotions. The denim day fashion show presented the message, Break the dress code, break the silence . It was a success for both the viewers and the organizers. The most important fall in of the event was the candlelight vigil. This was the time when those present were given the chance to voice out their concerns and emotions, at the same time it was a moment dedicated to silence and remembering the events that happened in the past. The event has given me more insights about sexual violence. I was deeply disheartened to hear their stories and chants about the experiences they had. It is my belief that no one can ever richly understand the difficulties and struggles these victims go through, unless the same sufferings were endured as that of the victims.I can personally say that I do not fully understand the real meaning of sexual abuse, although I, myself have experienced some during my youth. As a sixth grader, a female teacher asked me to show her my dead bo dy parts because I was not paying much attention during her class. She even threatened me not to tell anyone of the incident, or else she will not be handsome to me during class anymore. I was frightened, so I never said a word to anybody. A few weeks after, she came to me again. This time, she commanded me to take my clothes off, and masturbate in strawman of her. I did not have an idea as to what masturbation was, so she helped me.I felt broken afterwards. I do not know if this was considered as sexual abuse or not, all I knew was that she did that horrible deed unwillingly. The event helped me bridge reality with the lessons taught in class. Women were being treated as sex animals, and these treatments often lead to sexual violence. Professor Chikako Takeshita often invited guests to share some of the techniques that would be expert for both male and females against sexual violence. Personally, self-defense was the most beneficial for me, although I also valued the other inform ation given, such as the hotline for both endangered and victims of sexual violence.
